Why I Like This Picture – Megan and Kevin

This picture hangs in my living room, at 20×30.  I love this picture.  These kids were a riot at this wedding, acting like they didn’t want their picture taken but then mugging for the camera as soon as I acted like I was going to take one.  Megan and Kevin were married in Megan’s parents’ backyard the night before this was taken, and then held their reception for friends at the New Albany Golf Club the next evening.  They had a fantastic candy bar, with giant apothecary jars filled with a delicious variety of candies for their guests to take home.  Seeing the kids coming toward the candy table, I crouched behind the jars, waiting for the decisive moment.  The look on this kid’s face is hilarious, and the slightly exaggerated camera angle with his hands so prominent, all combine to make this a compelling picture and one worthy of being large on a wall.

Why I Like This Picture – Dena and Chris

I remember laughing and laughing the whole day at this wedding.  Everyone was very animated and theatrical and funny and energetic.  Dena and Chris’ wedding was at the King Ave. United Methodist church and their reception was in the Small Theatre at The Columbus Athenaeum.  We stopped at the Union Station Arch for pictures, and Dena’s brother/groomsman and a fellow groomsman just happened to jump for joy as soon as they exited the limo.  I had just got out of the limo myself and my camera settings were for really low light – NOT the situation outside.  I think I shot this picture at some ridiculous ISO, like 4000 or something insane for an outdoor shot.  But, hey.  When you spot a moment happening, you sometimes don’t have time for adjustments.  And this is a good one – having both their legs up in the air at the same angle, and all within the frame, not cut off, and within the grass – well, it’s just about perfect, even if it was shot at ISO 4000.

Why I Like This Picture – Caryn and Judd

There’s nothing I like more than watching people when they don’t think I’m watching.  Considering I’m mostly in these types of situations with an obvious camera around my neck and up to my face, it’s amazing to me that people are so willing to let their guard down in front of me.  And, for that, I am eternally grateful.  It must be my ability to blend into the background, which I guess could be good and bad.

This picture was made at Caryn and Judd’s Detroit wedding at the Detroit Zoo.  We were hanging out in the holding room, waiting for the ceremony to start.  To me, these expressions and the implications are priceless.  Two girls chatting, and one giving a sidelong glance in their direction.  You can’t make this stuff up.  This is my favorite part of this job – when people are just being people.  And ignoring me.
