Why I Like This Picture – Jenna and Kyle

In case you’re wondering, I shot the wedding of the woman with her hand down the front of Jenna’s dress.  She is Talia, Jenna’s sister.  Needless to say, I love when I’m passed around a family and get to see everyone again on yet another special occasion, this time at The Lakes Golf and Country Club.

I think it’s pretty obvious why I would like this picture – what’s happening is funny and Jenna’s expression is hilarious.  It has good composition too with the smiling faces of Jenna’s mom and sister-in-law clearly visible as well.  This one is a winner, for sure.

Why I Like This Picture – Courtney and Justin

It’s surprising to me that most people who smoke in the presence of a camera ask not to be photographed doing so.  I don’t smoke and personally don’t care for it, but for some reason I really like to shoot smokers (take that however you like).  Smokers smoking are interesting.  Lots of interesting facial expressions and there’s a lot of hand activity when smoking – holding the cigarette, up near the face, just lots of little things going on that I find interesting to photograph.  I know, that’s probably really strange to people who don’t observe for a living.  To me, photographs are made infinitely more interesting when hands are involved.  I had always felt this way and looked for this in photographs I was making, and then heard a very respected photographer give this advice at a conference and felt very validated.  It’s the little things.

Anyway, this image was from a quickie smoke break prior to donning the bridesmaids dresses at Courtney and Justin’s wedding at First Community Church/Station 67.  That the girl in the background is actively smoking while the girl in the foreground is clenching her smoke between her lips while putting in her earring – well, it doesn’t get more active than that.  Smoking? Meh.  This picture?  Love.

Why I Like This Picture – Erica and Alex

This “Why I Like This Picture” was from last summer at Erica and Alex’s wedding at the very elegant Capital Club in downtown Columbus.  At the time, Erica was the event coordinator for the Club, but on this day it was her turn to be spoiled by her wonderful staff.

I like this picture because of the expressions, naturally.  Expression trumps most everything.  OK, everything.  But in this picture, the focus is on the adorable cake topper people, whose expressions are cute on their own, but the fuzzed-out expressions of Erica and Alex are so unpretentiously cute and natural and normal – I just love them.
