{"id":1665,"date":"2012-01-26T19:00:22","date_gmt":"2012-01-27T00:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.karenevanspicturesblog.com\/?p=1665"},"modified":"2012-01-26T19:00:22","modified_gmt":"2012-01-27T00:00:22","slug":"im-weaving-im-weaving-columbus-cultural-arts-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/26\/im-weaving-im-weaving-columbus-cultural-arts-center\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m weaving, I&#8217;m weaving! &#8211; Columbus Cultural Arts Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saying &#8220;I&#8217;m weaving&#8221; always makes me expect to hear &#8220;where you going?&#8221;.\u00a0 But today, I actually did weave.\u00a0 And I have pictures to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>After I finished threading my heddles, it was time to put the loom back together and add a reed, through which all the heddled threads would also need to be threaded.\u00a0 Ugh.\u00a0 My reed, chosen according to the thickness of my thread, was 16-1; meaning there were 16 thread slots per inch.\u00a0 Luckily, there is a little tool for getting the threads through the reed or else I think I would&#8217;ve had to say my goodbyes.\u00a0 (Imagine threading a comb.)\u00a0 However, I have to admit that it took only a short time to get a rhythm going and I ended up making pretty quick work of the task.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1666\" title=\"weaving-07\" src=\"http:\/\/kep.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-07.jpg 612w, https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-07-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-07-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-07-160x160.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, after threading the reed and doing a couple of loom housekeeping chores, it was time to put a bobbin in a shuttle and weave some junk.\u00a0 Yes, junk.\u00a0 The junk is a few woven lines of thread that keep the warp threads evenly spaced at the very bottom.\u00a0 Junk &#8211; so many definitions!<\/p>\n<p>Then it was time to wind the bobbin with my real thread and get down to the real weaving.<\/p>\n<p>After a few passes through the shed with the shuttle, I figured out that having a wandering mind is detrimental to keeping track of which foot treadle was last pressed.\u00a0 Note to self:\u00a0 keep your mind on your feet!\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know whether it&#8217;s better that my treadles are to be pressed 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, or if it would be better to have some oddball combination of treadle presses, but either way I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;d have the same problem.\u00a0 Someone walks by and says hi or I think about what I want for dinner and, poof, where was I and which direction was I moving?<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, I made quite a bit of progress, weaving about 18 inches today.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I missed looping correctly over (or was it under?) some of the selvage threads, so, according to the teacher, I now have to cut out about three inches.\u00a0 Oh well.\u00a0 It could be worse!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1667\" title=\"weaving-08\" src=\"http:\/\/kep.goodgallery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"612\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-08.jpg 612w, https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-08-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/karenevanspictures.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/weaving-08-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>BTW, the shuttle is NOT a brilliant yellow with absolutely no detail.\u00a0 Thanks to the Retro Camera app I use on my phone, it is; but in real life it&#8217;s made of unpainted wood.\u00a0 Crazy.\u00a0 The scarf is also slightly less bright in person, and it&#8217;s soft and fuzzy to the touch because of the mohair (the multicolored thread).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saying &#8220;I&#8217;m weaving&#8221; always makes me expect to hear &#8220;where you going?&#8221;.\u00a0 But today, I actually did weave.\u00a0 And I have pictures to prove it.
